Career
Sridevi started her career as a child artist in the Tamil language film Kandan Karunai (1969) and continued to act as a child artist in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada films. She made her Bollywood debut as a child artist in the hit Julie (1975) and played her first adult role in Moondru Mudichu (1976). Sridevi quickly established herself as the top actress of the South Indian industry with films like Meendum Kokila (1981), Moondram Pirai (1982) and Kshana Kshanam (1991). However, Sridevi's main success came as a Bollywood actress with award-winning critically acclaimed roles in commercially successful films including Sadma (1983), Nagina (1986), Mr. India (1987), Chandni (1989), ChaalBaaz (1989), Lamhe (1991), Khuda Gawah (1992) and Judaai (1997). Comeback
Sridevi announced her comeback in early 2011. She is currently working in a new film English Vinglish. directed by Gauri Shinde (R. Balki's wife). The film stars French actor Mehdi Nebbou and Adil Hussain along with Amitabh Bachchan in a special cameo. Sridevi is playing the central role of an Indian woman married into an American household who enrols in an English learning program to please her family. The film described as the journey of a woman to find her identity is slated to release in 2012 in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.

Her return was officially announced in the IIFA Awards 2011 held in Toronto along with a montage of various Bollywood stars welcoming her back. The first look of the film was released on 15 June 2012 as a theatrical promo showing Sridevi's character Shashi struggling to read the Censor certificate of the trailer. It has met with an overwhelming response from her fans and the media.

Sridevi in English Vinglish
English Vinglish is an upcoming Indian drama film directed by debutant director Gauri Shinde and produced by R. Balki. The film marks the comeback of Sridevi after a 14 year sabbatical. The film also features French actor Mehdi Nebbou, Adil Hussain, and Priya Anand. Amitabh Bachchan makes a guest appearance in the Hindi version of the film, while Ajith Kumar comes in for the same role in the Tamil version. Sridevi plays the central role of Shashi, a Pune based Maharashtrian housewife, who enrolls for an English speaking course in order to please her husband and family.

Gauri wanted her characters to be rooted and so they decided that the family will be Marathi. That's why the film was shot in Pune. Sridevi character is inspired from Gauri's mother. English Vinglish will be dubbed into Telugu and will release simultaneously along with the Hindi and Tamil versions. English Vinglish is all set to hit the screens on 5th October 2012.
