Rakhee Gulzar, a showbiz legend is probably the only Indian actress who never took a break from the cinema. She has played every kind of roles, from a doting girlfriend to an obedient daughter in law, a spoilt brat to an affectionate mother, all with perfect finesse. Rakhee, a national film award winner has also been honored with the coveted Padma Shri Award by the Government of India.Rakhee was born on the auspicious day of Indian Independence i.e. 15th August, 1947 in West Bengal. Her father, a successful jute businessman from Bangladesh had to relocate to West Bengal after partition. Rakhee attended the Local Girl’s School in Ranaghat and completed her early education there. Rakhee was in an arranged wedlock with Ajay Biswas, a Bengali filmmaker whom she divorced after a short while.Rakhee later tied the knot with renowned lyricist and film director Gulzar. The couple separated a year after the birth of their daughter Meghna Gulzar. Meghna, a graduate in filmmaking from the New York University has directed films like ‘Filhaal’, ‘Just Married’, ‘Dus Kahaniyaan’ and her father’s biography called ‘Because He is’. Meghna stays with her father while Rakhee lives alone in her farmhouse in Panvel on the outskirts of Mumbai.Rakhee made her acting debut in the Bengali film ‘Badhu Baran’ released in the year 1967. She won accolades for her first film and was chosen by Rajshri Productions as the female lead opposite superstar Dharmendra in ‘Jeevan Mrityu’. She soon gained stardom with her next smash hit ‘Sharmilee’ opposite Shashi Kapoor. She played two extremely opposite characters in the film and won over cinema buffs in India. Rakhee next worked with top line directors and actors in successful films like ‘Heera Panna’, ‘Daag’, ‘Blackmail’ and ‘Tapasya’. Rakhee won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for ‘Daag: A Poem of Love’.Rakhee’s romantic pairing with veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan was loved by the audiences and the two appeared in a stride of blockbuster films such as Yash Chopra’s ‘Kabhie Kabhie’, Prakash Mehra’s ‘Muqaddar Ka Sikander’ , Ramesh Behl’s ‘Kasme Vaade’, Yash Chopra’s ‘Trishul’, Yash Chopra’s ‘Kaala Patthar’, Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s ‘Jurmana’ , Shakti Samanta’s ‘Barsaat Ki Ek Raat’, and Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s ‘Bemisal’. In addition to playing the romantic lead opposite Amitabh Bachchan, Rakhee starred as his sister-in-law in Ramesh Sippy’s ‘Shaan’, his mother in the film ‘Shakti’ as well as his dead mother in Prakash Mehra’s ‘Lawaaris’.Rakhee has received a number of awards for her phenomenal performances, including Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for ‘Daag: A Poem of Love’, Filmfare Best Actress Award for ‘Tapasya’, Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for ‘Ram Lakhan’ and National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for the Bengali film ‘Shubho Mahurat’. Moreover Rakhee has received around thirteen Filmfare nominations in the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress category.
