Sonam Kapoor, aged 24, is a bollywood actress and daughter of notable Indian actor Anil Kapoor. Sonam was born on June 9, 1985 in a filmy family in Mumbai. Daughter of Anil Kapoor and Sunita Kapoor, Sonam is the granddaughter of filmmaker Surinder Kapoor. Her uncle Boney Kapoor, a film producer is married to renowned actress Sridevi. Sonam’s younger sister, Rhea Kapoor, is studying in New York while brother Harshvardhan is studying at the Chapman University.
Sonam Kapoor attended the Arya Vidya Mandir in Mumbai and later joined the United World College of South East Asia to pursue her International Baccalaureate where she studied Theatre Arts and Chinese History. Sonam has also studied at the University of East London. Fluent in English, Hindi and Punjabi, Sonam Kapoor is trained in Indian classical and Latin dance forms. Sonam is pursuing a degree in Economics and Political Science through correspondence from the Bombay University.
Sonam Kapoor assisted the well known filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali in critical and commercial success ‘Black’ starring Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukherjee. During her stint as the Assistant director, she often visited the notorious Chor Bazar to shop for props. It was during this period that Sanjay and his mother Leela Bhansali suggested that Sonam should take up acting as a career.
Though her mother was not very keen on her pursuing an acting career, she remained determined and eventually convinced her family. Sonam was significantly overweight when she decided to act, however her persistence helped her shed those extra pounds. She even took acting, diction and dance lessons to prepare herself before facing the camera.
Sonam made her acting debut in 2007 release ‘Saawariya’ alongside another newcomer Ranbir Kapoor. Ranbir, son of popular actors rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor had also assisted Sanjay during the filming of ‘Black’. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Saawariya’ also starring Salman Khan and Rani Mukherjee in supporting roles failed to do well at the box office. However both Sonam and Ranbir were well received by the audiences. Sonam was nominated in the Best Female Debut category at all the major award ceremonies including Filmfare, Star Screen and Zee Cine Awards. Sonam received the Stardust Superstar of Tomorrow - Female for her performance in ‘Saawariya’.
Sonam Kapoor next appeared in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's ‘Delhi-6’ opposite Abhishek Bachchan. Though the film could not become a commercial success, Sonam earned accolades for her refreshing and unconventional portrayal as the female lead. Moreover she also got an opportunity to work with veteran actors like Waheeda Rehman, Om Puri, Rishi Kapoor and Supriya Pathak.
Sonam Kapoor is presently working on Karan Johar’s ‘I Hate Luv Storys’ opposite Imran Khan and Rajshree Ojha’s ‘Aisha’ opposite Abhay Deol. Sonam Kapoor is also expected to feature in David Dhawan's comedy film ‘Come on Pappu’, opposite Akshay Kumar and Anees Bzmee’s multi-starrer ‘Thank You’.
It is rumored that Sonam Kapoor is dating Punit Malhotra, nephew of ace fashion designer Manish Malhotra. Punit is directing Dharma Production’s ‘I Hate Luv Storys’ and supposedly met Sonam on the sets of this film.
Infectiously charming Sonam Kapoor has been named the Best Dressed Indian celebrity by People magazine. Sonam has also appeared on the cover of a number of popular magazines like People, Filmfare, Grazia, Cosmopolitan, Elle, Hello, Harper Bazaar, Seventeen etc. She has also featured in TV commercials for L’oreal, Montblanc and Anant. The down to earth diva, Sonam Kapoor also supports a number of social causes and is the brand ambassador for Elle’s Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign and Lead India Campaign.
